Jonathan Gøth-Rasmussen will be hoping to follow in his father's footsteps as he takes a four-shot lead into the final round of the Challenge de Cádiz.
The Dane, who is the son of former Challenge Tour winner Jacob Rasmussen, posted a six under par round of 66 on moving day to reach 12 under, four clear of countryman Hamish Brown, South African Wilco Nienaber, Spaniard Angel Ayora and Gary Hurley of Ireland in second.
The 2016 Junior Ryder Cup player carded five birdies on his front nine to make the turn at five under, before three more gains and two bogeys coming in put him in pole position ahead of the final round at Iberostar Real Golf Novo Sancti Petri.
“It was a pretty smooth round today,” he said. “I played very well and I was particularly good off the tee which set up some easy birdies out there.
“I hit two good drives on the par-fives on the front nine and managed to make two easy birdies. I made a great up and down the fourth hole and I felt in control throughout my round. Overall, it was solid today.
“I got my DP World Tour card at Qualifying School last year but have struggled to find any consistency so far this season. I found something in my game last week at the European Open and I have been hitting the ball very solid and chipping it nicely. I’m feeling confident in my game and hopefully I can keep it up tomorrow.”
The 26-year-old is excited for the final day in Cádiz and admits he would love to replicate his father, who won the Torneo RCG de Sevilla in 1993, by entering the Challenge Tour winner’s circle in Spain.
“My dad won on the Challenge Tour back in the 90’s in Spain so it would be pretty special to get my first win here too,” he said. “I would have loved to do it in Seville a couple of weeks ago but I am in a great position to make it happen this week.
“I’m going to keep plugging away and keep my aggressive approach off the tee. Hopefully that will put me in good positions to get it close with my approach shots and give me some more birdie opportunities.”
Swedish duo Christofer Rahm and Christofer Blomstrand share sixth position with South African Deon Germishuys, Swede Björn Åkesson, David Horsey of England and Welshman Oliver Farr on seven under par.
The final round of the Challenge de Cádiz will get under way at 8:00am local time, with Gøth-Rasmussen teeing it up in the final group alongside Ayora and Nienaber at 10:06am.
