Following a lengthy fog delay, the 28 year old carded four birdies and a bogey in a front nine 34, before birdieing the par three tenth and carding a three at the par five next.

That took him to six under par for his opening round, one ahead of England's Miles Tunnicliff and home favourites Doug McGuigan, Jaco Van Zyl, Chris Swanepoel and Martin Maritz.

Lurking just one shot further back on four under was Open Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen, Oliver Bekker and Australia's Wade Ormsby - who was through 17 holes and about to set the clubhouse target.

Play was stopped at 0640 local time, just ten minutes after the start the first group began, because a lack of visibility With mist and rain hanging over the course, the group - Michael du Toit, Ormsby and Manuel Quiros - could not play their second shots forcing organisers to stop play until it resumed again at 0815.
