LIFElabs is sponsoring the ‘Birdies for Good’ hole at the event taking place at the Centurion Club, in St Albans. The digital-currency company will donate the equivalent of £500 of LIFEtokens to the tournament’s Official Charity Partners (the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and the European Tour Foundation) every time a birdie is recorded on the second hole of the six-hole circuit.

LIFElabs is on a mission to make LIFEtoken the most accessible digital currency in the world, that can be easily used in everyday life, while also offering people the chance to give a little back to good causes and charities around the world simply through the way they choose to pay.

It is the first digital currency firm to partner with the European Tour and to sponsor a sporting event of this kind. One third of the company’s LIFEtoken total supply is ringfenced for philanthropic causes, worldwide – a driving factor in the GolfSixes partnership.

Mark Casey, Championship Director of GolfSixes, said: “A philanthropic and innovative company like LIFElabs is a perfect fit for the event. Their sponsorship of the second hole, ‘Birdies for Good’, not only benefits our Official Charity Partners, the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and the European Tour Foundation, it also demonstrates the inventive nature of GolfSixes.”

David Pugh-Jones, Global VP of Brand, LIFElabs, said: “Lifelabs and the European Tour’s GolfSixes are a natural match. Both of us are leaders in our industry, at the forefront of innovation and using our platforms to contribute towards philanthropic causes. Through this partnership we have access to a mixture of innovators, sports lovers and tech adopters alike, and this connection will bring great things to both the European Tour and LIFElabs in the near future”.

The second edition of GolfSixes features further innovation, with the introduction of wildcard teams. including an England Women’s Team of Charley Hull and Georgia Hall and a European Women’s Team featuring Mel Reid and Carlota Ciganda. Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjørn and his Solheim Cup counterpart Catriona Matthew will become the first male and female professionals to play together in a competitive match play format on the European Tour when they form the Captains Team.

Defending champions Lucas Bjerregaard and Thorbjørn Olesen will return to represent Denmark in the fast-paced competition as the 16 teams go head to head for a total prize fund of €1 million with the eventual winners receiving €100,000 each.

The 16 teams will compete over six holes in a group stage, with teams split into four groups of four, before the top two teams from each group progress to the knockout stages - the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, a third/fourth place play-off match and the final - on Sunday May 6.

In the group stages, three points will be given for victory with one point awarded for a draw and the matches will be played in a greensomes match play format.

Once again the six holes will be themed, with the popular shot clock hole returning - with a penalty imposed if players take longer than 30 seconds per shot - alongside the long drive and closest to the pin holes.

The innovative six-hole competition will have a festival feel with a centrally-located Fan Zone full of entertainment for all the family.

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity raises money solely to support The Royal Marsden, a world-leading cancer centre.  They ensure their nurses, doctors and research teams can provide the very best care and develop life-saving treatments, which are used across the UK and around the world.

From funding state-of-the-art equipment and ground-breaking research, to creating the very best patient environments, they will never stop looking for ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

The European Tour Foundation works with charities, players, governing bodies and partners to ensure a lasting legacy in the countries where the European Tour plays.
