Golf set to take over St Andrew Square

As part of the build-up to the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open, St Andrew Square in Edinburgh will be transformed into a Golf Coast Village this week in the build-up to the action taking place this summer.

In preparation for the 24th edition of Scotland’s national Senior Tour event at Archerfield from August 19-21, as well as two other major sporting occasions taking place in East Lothian this year, the centre of Edinburgh will be taken over by golfers with a number of activities for both children and adults alike.

Two-time European Tour winner Stephen McAllister, now a European Senior Tour regular, is hosting a three-hour long clinic from 12-3pm on Saturday, June 18.

McAllister enjoyed his most successful year on the European Tour in 1990, winning both the Vinho Verde Atlantic Open and KLM Dutch Open en route to finishing in the top 20 of the Order of Merit.

Scotland’s Golf Coast Village will give budding golfers the opportunity to take part in different activities, with 1999 Open Champion and 2016 Ryder Cup Vice Captain Paul Lawrie hosting on Friday afternoon from 1pm to 6pm.

Lawrie was announced last month as one of Darren Clarke’s four Vice Captains for this year’s Ryder Cup as Europe prepare to defend their title against the United States at Hazeltine National Golf Club, Minnesota.

The Loretto Golf Academy is hosting children’s clinics on both Friday, June 17, and Sunday, June 19.

In addition to the clinics, there will be a long-drive simulator, nearest-the-pin simulator and a putting challenge.

Ticket holders for the Paul Lawrie Match Play, held at Archerfield from August 4-7, will also be granted free entry to the Scottish Senior Open, held a fortnight later at the same venue.

That will be the Senior Tour’s second stop on Scottish soil as Carnoustie will host The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex in July for the first time since 2010, from July 21-24.
