Golf de Pierpont steeped in history

Golf de Pierpont will witness some intense competition this weekend as the €160,000 KPMG Trophy is contested, but 200 years ago an entirely different battle took place.

The picturesque golf club, hosting a Challenge Tour event for the first time, was the scene of the first battle between Napoleon and the allied forces in the Napoleonic Wars, and its buildings provided shelter for the Dutch regiment in the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815.

These days the 17th century manor farm buildings house the clubhouse and a 20-room hotel, adjacent to two superb golf courses.

Since 2011, when new owners arrived, the club has undergone major investment, renovating both the Grand Pierpont – the par 72, 6848-yard Championship course – and the Petit Pierpont – a nine-hole executive course.

Originally designed by J. Dudok van Heel in 1992 and revised by Bruno Steensels, the Grand Pierpont has manicured fairways on undulating terrain and superb greens year-round.

It is frequently described as having a links feel and has drawn high praise from the Challenge Tour players competing in the KPMG Trophy.

More than 80,000 trees and shrubs have been planted in the last four years, and are the two courses are complemented by excellent practice facilities.
