Given that he had a quintuple bogey nine on his second hole of the tournament, Englishman Phil Golding was rather pleased that he is in contention heading into the final round of the WINSTONgolf Senior Open.
The 51 year old recovered from that to sign for a two under par 70 on Friday, but the same hole proved his nemesis again in round two, costing him a double bogey which proved the only blemish in a round of 67.
That left him at seven under par overall, three shots off the lead held by Bob Cameron.
“I’m in a good position considering I made two costly errors today and yesterday,” said Golding. “I had a big number on the second yesterday when I made a mistake off the tee and then misjudged the wind on my second and third shots.
“I started off really well this morning, but then on the same hole – which today was my 11th – I made a six. I need to have a word with my caddie because he made me take more club than I wanted to, and I didn’t commit to the shot and ended up in a terrible position again. I was furious – I’ve taken 15 shots on that hole in two rounds.
“The wind was not as strong as yesterday but it was still very tricky as it kept changing direction.
“I dug deep yesterday and I was very pleased with how I bounced back with eight birdies. Normally when you make that number, even early on, you’re out of the tournament.
“Today I knew seven under was leading and I wanted to reach that mark, so I was happy to birdie the last to do that.
“I played indifferently last week, so to play well for two days – those errors aside – and put myself in a decent position for Sunday is pleasing.”
