Garcia remains in charge at Valderrama

Sergio Garcia remained on course to successfully defend his Andalucía Valderrama Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation title after making a steady start to his final round on Sunday.

A series of weather delays on the opening three days at Real Club Valderrama forced tournament organisers to reduce the event to 54 holes.

There was a further one-hour suspension due to the threat of lightning shortly after play got under way on Sunday morning but things soon brightened up and the players returned to the course at 10.35am local time.

Local favourite Garcia, who is looking to make it a hat-trick of Andalucía Masters victories after winning the 2011 edition and repeating the trick last year, began the day four strokes ahead of nearest challenger Ashley Chesters after posting a sensational second-round 64 on Saturday.

And he opened his third and final round with three comfortable pars and a birdie at the fourth to move to 11 under par and go five shots clear of fellow Spaniard Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño and Englishman Lee Westwood after they made bright starts on Sunday.

Irishman Shane Lowry was another shot back on five under after picking up two shots in his first five holes.

Seven-time European Tour winner Fernández-Castaño arrived in Andalucía knowing he needed a big week in order to retain his playing privileges.

Fernández-Castaño, who is a member at this week's host venue, produced opening rounds of 70 and 68 to give himself a good chance on Sunday.

And he made a brilliant start to his final round, holing from eight feet at the second green to pick up his first shot of the day before notching another birdie at the next to jump to six under.

Westwood, meanwhile, reeled off three straight gains from the second to join his playing partner in a tie for second.
