The 13th seed had claimed a one hole win over great friend and Ryder Cup team-mate Lee Westwood in a topsy-turvy Group 13 contest on Wednesday and looked set to go to the wire again against Ryan Moore.

The duo traded the first two holes before birdies on the third and sixth put Moore ahead, with Garcia hitting straight back to make it all square at the turn.

The American then birdied the 11th to go one up with seven to play.

Westwood, meanwhile, was one down to Nedbank Golf Challenge champion Marc Leishman after 11 holes.

In Group 9, Patrick Reed had two birdies in the first eight holes to go two up against Matthew Fitzpatrick, while Phil Mickelson and Daniel Berger were all square through seven holes.

Three-time European Tour winner Kiradech Aphibarnrat was one down to Dustin Johnson after seven holes in Group 8, where Jimmy Walker was two up against Robert Streb having played the same amount of holes.

Louis Oosthuizen and Bernd Wiesberger were all square after five holes in Group 16 with a third European Tour member, Andy Sullivan, one down to Matt Jones.

Victor Dubuisson admitted after his opening Group 1 victory over Justin Thomas that he would need to improve his game to beat World Number One Jordan Spieth, and he did not get off to the best of starts on Thursday, sitting two down through four holes.

Thomas and Jamie Donaldson were all square after four holes.

Branden Grace made a birdie-birdie start to quickly move two up against David Lingmerth in Group 11, while Chris Kirk led Russell Knox by the same margin.

In Group 6, Adam Scott birdied the first to go one up on Chris Wood, and Bill Haas and Thomas Pieters were all square.

Bubba Watson and J.B. Holmes were one up against Emiliano Grillo and Patton Kizzire respectively at the turn in Group 4.
