Gallacher, who dropped down the leaderboard when he followed an opening 68 with 76 yesterday, birdied the first and fourth holes to reach level par.

That put him in a tie for fifth and five adrift of Ramsay, who led Grégory Havret by two and the in-form Sergio Garcia by three.

Sweden’s Christian Nilsson - third in the Portugal Masters earlier this month - was alongside Gallacher, having picked up shots at the fourth and fifth.

England’s Steve Webster made gains at the fifth, seventh and ninth to turn in 32. He was joined on two over by Ross Fisher, who bounced back from his second round 79 with birdies at the first and third.

Danny Willett, who began the tournament with rounds of 75 and 74, moved inside the top 30 with a 68 containing four birdies and an eagle at the par five 11th. His only blips came at the seventh, where he carded a double bogey six, and the 18th.
