French Riviera Masters opening day abandoned

The opening day of the French Riviera Masters was abandoned after severe rain flooded much of the course at Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort, deeming it unplayable.

The first round will now take place over the second day and the tournament has been reduced to 36 holes, with the Alliance Pro-Am reduced from two days to one as a result of the unfortunate weather conditions.

Terre Blanche golf course under water

Pascal Vincent, European Tour Referee, said: “Unfortunately, the pouring rain we had last night has been standing since and the fairways, bunkers and greens are totally under water.

“Once the rain stops, we would need to have a 3 hours gap before tee-times, to allow the green-keepers to work on bunkers and wipe the greens.

“There is no improvement in the forecast for the weather today so that’s why, considering both conditions for players and also the shape of the course, we decided to cancel the round rather than to report new tee-times.”

Round One tees off on Saturday at 08:00am with a two-tee start.
