Francesco Molinari wins in Maryland

Francesco Molinari has won the Quicken Loans National by eight shots to earn his first PGA Tour title.

The Italian, who has also won the BMW PGA Championship this year, moved up to 16th on the Official World Golf Rankings following his success in Maryland, in a tournament hosted by Tiger Woods.

The 30-year-old told the PGA Tour's website: "It's amazing to win a tournament hosted by Tiger. He is probably the greatest ever to play the game and I grew up as a teenager watching him on TV dominating golf tournaments.

“It's even more special to win in this style and to get his congratulations on the last green was a very proud moment for me.”

Molinari had started the day level at 13 under par with Mexican Abraham Ancer, but two birdies on the front nine saw him pull away from the joint overnight leader.

He then went on a stunning run after the turn, with a 50 foot eagle on the par five ninth sparking him to pick up six shots in five holes before parring his way home for a 62.
