Fowler targets flying finish to the season

Peter Fowler is bidding to round off his season in some style with a third victory of the year in the MCB Tour Championship, which returns to Constance Belle Mare Plage, on the holiday island of Mauritius, from December 11-13.

Fowler secured back-to-back victories in the Acorn Jersey Open and the ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship in June, thereby taking his tally of European Senior Tour titles to five.

And whilst the Australian has been unable to add to his haul of wins since then, he is hopeful of succeeding Paul Wesselingh as champion and denying the Englishman a historic hat-trick of titles when the seventh edition of the €420,000 tournament takes place next month.

The 56 year old said: “Hopefully I can finish off another very solid season with a good performance in Mauritius next month. It’s such a fabulous end to the season – I enjoy playing in the heat and I enjoy the challenge of the course at Constance Belle Mare Plage, because you have to play some really good golf to score well.

“I also have to give great credit to Marc Farry, who plays the role of tournament host to perfection. It’s just a very enjoyable week, and I’ll enjoy it even more if I can manage to play well – or maybe even get a win.”

Amongst those trying to prevent Fowler from taking the title is Colin Montgomerie, who has long since wrapped up the Order of Merit after another stunning season in the over-50 ranks.

Montgomerie ensured a second successive John Jacobs Trophy after winning the Travis Perkins Masters for the third year in a row, but Fowler – currently second in the Order of Merit, €54,885 ahead of Barry Lane – is determined to finish best of the rest.

He said: “I’ve been pleased with how it’s gone this year – it’s just a shame that Monty has played golf from another planet again. We all had a mountain to climb from the moment he won the US Senior PGA Championship. Because the prize fund is so big I think I would’ve had to win the next few events to come close to catching him up! But it’d be good to finish best of the rest, so hopefully I can finish the job off in Mauritius.”

As well as Farry, Fowler, Montgomerie and Wesselingh, the field will also feature former Ryder Cup-winning Captain Sam Torrance and two-time Senior Major Champion Roger Chapman.
