The 40 year old, who lost his European Tour card at the end of last season to find himself without full playing rights for the first time since 2001, had been two shots behind overnight leader Zander Lombard following an opening 69.

Starting his second round at the tenth, birdies at the 11th and 15th lifted Foster to five under before he dropped a first shot of the day on the 17th.

But with South African Lombard bogeying three of his first eight holes, Foster  - whose only win in 400 previous European Tour events came in South Africa 12 years ago – found himself one clear of Lombard and Australians Ashley Hall and Todd Sinnott.

Former Amateur Championship runner-up Lombard had dropped a shot on his opening hole, and after birdieing the short fifth also bogeyed the seventh and eighth.
