Five Things you might have missed: Day Three

Moving Day at the 147th Open Championship had it all. We haven’t seen such a dramatic third round at The Open for quite some time, so it would’ve been easy to miss something. Let us help you out with that and pick out some great stories and moments from day three in Scotland here..

Kevin Chappell and Jordan Spieth shake hands after the third round of the 147th Open Championship

JORDAN SPIETH’S £9 HAIRCUT

Like any other young man Jordan Spieth woke up on Saturday morning in need of a haircut. However, let’s face it, the 24 year old isn’t like most other men of his age, having already won three Major Championships, which is why it’s so refreshing to see the Texan opting to take on the risk of having a trim in a foreign country. Now although there are no language barriers between Scotland and America, it would be fair to say the accents are very different, which is where the problems appear to have begun for the defending champion.

“Yeah I don’t even know where I went and the hairdresser went a little high and tight,” Spieth said. “It was intended to be what I normally get, and instead he went a little shorter and became a very British haircut. A little shaved on the sides, a little longer on top. It is what it is. It’s summertime now so it works out."

So, according to Kevin Kisner, one of Spieth roomies for the week, Jordan spent some time searching on Yelp before finding the hairdresser he visited. According to reports the hairdresser didn’t recognise Spieth, and didn’t seem too fussed by his American visitor. After leaving a generous tip and paying £20 for a £9 haircut Spieth headed off to the course with a much shorter look than he was going for, which resulted in much chat on the range and Jordan keeping his hat on for most of the day.  We don’t think it looks that bad Jordan…

RORY’S 408 YARD MONSTER DRIVE

Never one to stay out of the golfing headlines for too long, Rory McIlroy, who remains in contention at five under par and four back heading into the final day of The Open, unleashed what can only be described as monster drive at the par five 14th hole, which somehow went 408 yards! It was so long fans were still walking across the fairway at the crossing point up near the green, completely unwise to the fact that Rory’s ball had just gone bounding beyond the crossing point. What a drive. You can see it for yourself below…

ZANDER LOMBARD’S MEMORABLE OPEN HOLE-OUT

Zander Lombard has really impressed this week at Carnoustie, especially considering the South African has endured a season of mixed form on the European Tour. In contention for much of the first three days here, Lombard dropped three shots over holes 16 and 17 as his challenge began to falter. But with golf being golf, a moment that will live with the 23 year old forever awaited him on the famous 18th hole. After finding the fairway with his drive Lombard holed out from the fairway in remarkable fashion for eagle. Now that’s how you finish a round!

ZACH JOHNSON’s MONSTER PUTT

Zach Johnson is widely regarded as one of the best putters on the planet, which is something the two-time Major Champion was very keen to show off on Saturday at The Open. Faced with a putt of over 100 foot on the sixth hole, most players wouldn’t dare to hole out. Most players aren’t Zach Johnson with the short stick. Over to you  Zach…

THE AMERICAN CO-LEADER WITH A LOT OF SPORTING EUROPEAN HERITAGE

The very impressive Xander Schauffele co-leads The Open, which is by now something most people know. However not everyone will know that the 24 year old has a lot of European sporting heritage, with the youngster’s father Stefan being an elite athlete growing up in Germany. Stefan may have represented his country in the Olympics having been on the country’s radar for the decathlon, had it not been for a nasty head-on car collision, which motivated Stefan to move to the US.

And the sporting genes don’t stop there either, with two of Schauffele's great-grandfathers having played high-level football. Johann Hoffmann played for the Austria national team, while Richard Schauffele played for the German Bundesliga club VFB Stuttgart, while somehow finding the time to also excel in track and field. So there you have it, just one of those families that are riduclously good at sport.
