Five things to know: Shipco Masters

Ahead of the first Staysure Tour tournament on European soil in 2018, here are five key facts before the golf gets underway at the Shipco Masters promoted by Simon’s Golf Club.

Montgomerie makes Danish return

Colin Montgomerie heads back to Simon’s Golf Club 15 years since he finished second behind Ian Poulter at the 2003 Nordic Open.

The Scot carded a final round of four under par but Poulter fired in a six under par 66 to take the Nordic Open title on 22 under par.

The three-time Senior Major Champion and five-time Ryder Cup winner will be one of the eye-catching stars teeing off in Denmark this week.

Davies to become history maker

Dame Laura Davies will become the first woman to compete in a European Tour-approved stroke play event at Simon’s Golf Club.

England’s most successful female golfer will compete in the Staysure Tour event and make history on the over-50s circuit.

Ryder Cup captains in town

Montgomerie is one of four victorious Ryder Cup Captains in action in Denmark alongside Paul McGinley, José María Olazábal and Ian Woosnam.

McGinley guided Europe to a wonderful win at Gleneagles in 2014, Montgomerie was victorious in charge of Europe eight years ago, Olazábal orchestrated the Miracle in Medinah, while Woosnam led Europe to success in 2006.

Simon’s Golf Club is celebrating its 25thanniversary since the opening tee shot was hit. It was struck by 1991 Masters Champion and 2017 World Golf Hall of Frame inductee Woosnman.

The Welshman will be back at Simon’s Golf Club as the club begins its celebrations during the week of the first European tournament on the 2018 Staysure Tour International Schedule.

Since its establishment, the course has held European Tour, European Challenge Tour and Ladies European Tour events during the 1990s and 2000s.

Qualifying champion

Peter Scott won the two-day Shipco Masters Qualifying tournament to gain entry into the Shipco Masters promoted by Simon’s Golf Club.

Peter Wilson, who made his Staysure Tour debut in 2017, finished second on five over par, one stroke ahead of Denmark's Søren Telling and England's Mark Wharton who shared third place.

A four-man play-off decided the final spot with England’s Nick Mitchell triumphed on the third extra hole.
