The 39thU.S. Senior Open Championship, a Senior Major Championship, is set to begin on Thursday at The Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs.
Ahead of the USGA’s most prestigious over-50s tournament, we focus on five players who could very well be holding the Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy come Sunday evening.
1)Bernhard Langer –it is no secret that Langer is a dominant force in senior golf. However, with only one U.S. Senior Open win to his name— the 2010 edition, which was played at Sahalee Country Club — you can be sure the ageless-wonder will be hungry to win the tournament for a second time. The German has already won all five Senior Majors, and if he were to win this week he would need only another Senior PGA Championship to complete the impressive feat for a second time.
2)Colin Montgomerie –the 2014 U.S. Senior Open Championship winner has been in fine form this season. Currently occupying second on the Staysure Tour Order of Merit, with three Senior Majors to his name and having recently won the Shipco Masters promoted by Simon's Golf Club, Mongtomerie has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with and will join Langer as the tournament favourite in Colorado.
3)Paul Broadhurst –the Staysure Tour Order of Merit leader, who has already won a Senior Major this year — the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship — continues to prove that he knows how to get the job done on Sunday. A winner of the 2016 Senior Open Championship as well as the 2016 Staysure Tour Order of Merit, the Englishman will take his 2018 scoring average of 66.25 into this week as he seeks to lift his third Senior Major trophy.
4)Clark Dennis – the American, who won the 2017 Staysure Tour Order of Merit, will be hungrier than ever to win his first Senior Major as he tees it up in his home country fresh off another Staysure Tour win. After claiming his second-consecutive Senior Italian Open title earlier this month, Dennis is taking plenty of confidence, and form, into this week. Sitting in sixth on the 2018 Staysure Tour Order of Merit, a good week could spark a run at a successful defence of the John Jacobs Trophy.
5)Miguel Ángel Jiménez –like a fine wine, Jiménez seems to only get better with age. The legendary Spaniard has not finished outside the top 20 all season on the European Tour, and after winning the most recent Senior Major in America, the 54 year old is as good a bet as any to win to be holding some USGA hardware at the end of the week.
