Fitzpatrick takes confidence from Augusta

Matthew Fitzpatrick is hoping he will be able to take his game to the next level after firing a closing 67 to finish in a tie for seventh at the Masters Tournament.

The Englishman was making his first appearance at Augusta National as a professional after playing as an amateur in 2014, and shared the low round of the day with champion Danny Willett and Paul Casey on Sunday.

The 21 year old is no stranger to success, having won last season's British Masters supported by Sky Sports as he secured ten top tens in his rookie campaign on The European Tour.

And he now believes that he can go on to even greater things with the help of the boost in confidence that performing at a Major Championship will give him.

"It's great experience for me," he said. "My second round scores messed me up a little bit but it's one of those that you learn from.

"Now that I feel that I can go low, particularly on a Sunday in a Major, once I've done it once, you sort of feel like you can do it again if your game is in the right shape.

"For me, knowing that is a real help going forward."

He added: "I just played really well tee to green and I just gave myself a lot of chances. That was the big thing for me today, I just kept giving myself chances.

"I had a lot of putts between six to 15 feet and certainly the back nine I started to hole them. That was the difference."

Lee Westwood is a veteran of 17 Masters Tournaments and he closed with a 69 to finish second at Augusta for the second time.

The 42 year old was playing in the same group as Willett and an eagle at the 15th got him within one shot of the eventual champion before a bogey on the next saw his challenge falter.

"It was a bit scrappy," he said. "I got away with a few shots. I made a good par on 11. On 13, it went through the trees and I ended up making four. I played a nice chip on 15. Not many people hole that one under that kind of pressure.

You come out and contend in the first Major of the year, obviously I must be doing something right - Lee Westwood

"I've been feeling edgy on the greens for a couple of years now.

"You get under pressure in Augusta and the greens are running 16, 17 on the stimp, you're going to start feeling a little bit nervous, which I did. But I still made some nice putts coming in."
