The Englishman is looking to become the first man to successfully defend the title at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club since the great Seve Ballesteros in 1978 and he was well on his way to doing that as he got to 12 under.

Malaysian Gavin Green carded the lowest round of the week so far with a 63 to sit three shots back alongside England's Daniel Brooks, Frenchman Mike Lorenzo-Vera, Japan's Hideto Tanihara and China's Wu Ashun.

Fitzpatrick had started the day two shots behind overnight leader and playing partner Tanihara but three birdies and a chip-in eagle on the front nine sent him clear.

Wu birdied the third, holed from seven feet on the fifth and put his approach on the next to four feet to get within one of the lead and Green then joined the party at eight under thanks to two birdie bursts.

The reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit winner was level par stood on the seventh tee but made three birdies in a row and then rattled off another hat-trick from the 13th.

Fitzpatrick hit a lovely approach into the second to join the group in second but Green was soon in a share of the lead when holed from 15 feet on the 16th to make it four birdies in a row.

Wu was also a man on a roll and he put his tee-shot on the eighth inside 12 feet and then took advantage of the par five next to be the first man into double figures.

Green finished with two pars to set the target at nine under and he was joined there by Fitzpatrick who holed a monster putt on the fifth.

Brooks turned in 32 with four birdies and a bogey but back-to-back gains on the 11th and 12th had him at nine under, which was in a four-way tie for the lead when Wu got in bunker trouble on the 11th.

Another beautiful approach from Fitzpatrick set up a third birdie of the day on the sixth and the 24 year old held the solo lead.

Better was to come on the driveable par four next, as Fitzpatrick chipped in for an eagle and a three-shot lead.

Overnight leader Tanihara had dropped shots on the fourth and sixth but he recovered nicely, hitting a good approach into the seventh and an excellent tee-shot into the par three next to join the group in second.

Wu made it back-to-back bogeys on the 12th to drop to eight under alongside Nino Bertasio, who signed for a 65.

The 30 year old made birdies on the second, ninth, 11th, 13th and 14th before recovering from a bogey on the 17th with a birdie on the last.

Lorenzo-Vera had bogeyed the second but he picked up shots on the fourth, seventh, eighth and tenth to make a it a four-way tie in second.

That then became a five-way tie after an excellent Wu approach on the 14th.

Spaniard Nacho Elvira and American Doug Ghim were at eight under playing the back nine.

Lee Westwood was in the clubhouse at seven under alongside Dane Lucas Bjerregaard and South African Haydn Porteous, who were still on the course.
