Fitzpatrick Set to Defend

Matthew Fitzpatrick has confirmed that he will be returning to the Swiss Alps to defend his title for the renowned event, from September 6-9.

The 2016 Ryder Cup rookie took last year’s Omega European Masters in thrilling fashion when he carded a final round 64 to force a play-off with Australia’s Scott Hend.

On the first hole of sudden- death, the Englishman calmly converted a difficult par putt to keep his title hopes alive, and after narrow misses for birdie by both Fitzpatrick and Hend on the second extra play-off hole, the duo was headed back to the 18thtee once again.

Maintaining his nerve throughout, the Sheffield native found the fairway and green before two putting for par and breaking the deadlock as Hend made bogey following a missed green.

“I’m delighted to announce I’ll be defending my title in Crans Montana,” said Fitzpatrick. “I’m really looking forward to being back and competing there again- it’s going to be a great week.”

The picturesque mountain views of Crans Montana offer an exquisite setting for the Omega European Masters—an event that has been part of the European Tour’s International Schedule since the Tour’s inception in 1972. Previous winners include Spanish golfing legend Seve Ballesteros, 2018 Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjørn, as well as numerous Major Champions including Sir Nick Faldo, Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia.

The 23 year old Fitzpatrick has quickly proven he belongs in the company of the tournament’s decorated past champions. With four European Tour victories already to his name, and a distinguished amateur career, which included wins at both the US Amateur Championship and the Boys Amateur Championship, the World Number 38 is sure to be among the favourites when he tees it up at the 2018 Omega European Masters.
