Finch soars as Bourdy remains clear

England’s Richard Finch reeled off five birdies in succession to move within one shot of overnight leader Gregory Bourdy as the second morning of the Alfred Dunhill Championship began in Mpumalanga.

Bourdy, meanwhile, had gotten off to a solid start of his own after an impressive 66 on Thursday saw him claim a one shot lead following the first round at Leopard Creek Country Club.

The Frenchman, beginning at the tenth hole, made three pars to start before back-to-back birdies at the iconic par five 13th and par four 14th helped him retain his narrow lead despite Finch’s rip-roaring first six holes.

Finch, who signed for a two under par 70 on Thursday, parred the opening tenth hole before a run of 3-2-4-3-4 from the 11th saw his surge 19 places up the leaderboard in the 19th edition of the event.

Last week a winner at the Thailand Golf Championship, South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel was two shots back as the morning progressed after making a gain at the par four 11th.

On an overcast but once again warm and highly scoreable day, an intriguing second round was in prospect.
