Fernandez-Castaño shines despite the weather

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño was pleased to overcome unseasonably cold and wet conditions on the opening day of the BMW PGA Championship.

The Spaniard carded a four under par 68 to move to claim a share of third and move within two of first day leader James Kingston.

The English weather provided chilly temperatures, rain, hail, and lightning – the latter causing a 90-minute delay.

“It wasn't an easy day,” said Fernandez-Castaño. “I think we've been quite lucky at the end. I've been expecting worse weather than we had at the end, and I played nicely.

“I just made a lot of birdies, made a lot of important putts, and overall very happy, because I have to admit that this is not a course I know how to play very well, so anything that's under par is always a good score around Wentworth, and four under is very good.

“It reminded me a little bit of Dunhill Links weather instead of the BMW Championship. We normally get warmer temperatures than we had today, but I think it's been pretty much the same for everybody, so it's been pretty fair.

“Overall, as I said, very happy, because this is a track that any time you manage to beat the course, it's always a very, very good score.”
