Fearless Freiburghaus takes control in Newmachar

Jeremy Freiburghaus will look to secure his maiden European Challenge Tour title at the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A when he takes a four-stroke lead into the final round at Newmachar Golf Club.

The 25-year-old carded a sensational bogey-free seven under par round of 64 to move to 11 under par overall, four-shots clear of Englishmen Tom Sloman and Nathan Kimsey who share second place on seven under par.

The Swiss opened his third round with three consecutive birdies and despite the wind swirling, he added four further birdies on the back nine to sign for the low round of the day.

“I’m delighted with my round today,” he said. “I got off to the perfect start with three birdies and my putter was pretty hot today. My putter was key because I made a lot of long putts which helped me make birdies and save pars.”

The 25-year-old arrived in Scotland full of confidence having recorded a fourth place finish at last week’s Challenge de España to move into the top 20 on the Road to Mallorca Rankings, and he is now setting his sights on a first Challenge Tour victory tomorrow.

“Playing in the high winds last week taught me a lot because today both my long game and my short game was on point,” he said. “It was a tough test out there because the wind was gusting, and you had to focus on shot shape off the tee and where to land it on the greens.

“I’m going to keep the same strategy heading into the final day. I am just going to focus on myself and hopefully everything else takes care of itself.”

Home favourite Kieran Cantley sits in fourth place on six under par, while Englishman Marco Penge, Welshman David Boote, Frenchman Adrien Saddier, Spaniard Javier Sainz and Denmark’s Martin Simonsen share fifth position on five under.

The final round of the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A will begin at 8:00am local time, with Freiburghaus teeing it up in the final group alongside Sloman and Kimsey at 9:55am.
