Marc Farry produced the perfect start to his second round in the Cannes Mougins Masters to strengthen his hopes of victory in the tournament that he helped to organise.

The Frenchman, who started the day four strokes behind overnight leader Des Smyth, birdied his first three holes before picking up another shot on the sixth hole. He bogeyed then seventh but then immediately recovered that shot on the eighth to reach the turn in four under par 35.

Farry is chasing his second victory of the season after capturing his maiden European Senior Tour title in the Handa Irish Senior Open presented by Fáilte Ireland.

He was one stroke behind Smyth at the halfway mark of the second round after the Irishman produced a solid front nine, with his only birdie coming on the seventh hole.

Scotland’s Gordon Brand Jnr, who is currently sixth in the Order of Merit, posted four birdies in his opening seven holes to join Farry on seven under par while Englishman Mark Belsham set the clubhouse target of six under par following a round of 70.

Five-time European Tour winner Barry Lane eagled the 14th hole en route to a superb 69 in windy conditions to move to four under par, while Peter Mitchell eagled the par four sixth hole as he carded a 73 to also finish on four under par.
