Here's three recommendations from our statistics guru...

Pick of the favourites: Martin Kaymer

Martin Kaymer

When you combine Kaymer’s strong recent form with his good record in this event, it makes the German a good favourite in Monza this week. The 31 year old, who will be buoyed by his recent inclusion as a Captain’s Pick for The Ryder Cup at Hazeltine later this month, finished in second place here last year, having narrowly missed out on a 12th European Tour title in a play-off to Rikard Karlberg. In his three appearances in the Italian Open he has finished in the top 15 each time, and comes into this week on a run of 11 consecutive made cuts, during which the two-time Major champion has posted six top ten finishes.

Form horse: Scott Hend

Scott Hend

Two top five finishes in his last two events make the Australian one of the most inform men in the field this week. Hend led into the final rounds of both the Omega European Masters and last week’s KLM Open, before finishing second in Switzerland and tied fourth in the Netherlands. Seven of his last eight rounds on the European Tour have been 68 and lower, with the big-hitter a combined 29 under par over that period. The 43 year old was unlucky to miss the cut here last year having posted a one under par total after two rounds, so will be keen to hang around for the weekend this time and add to his current run of seven successive made cuts. Averaging nearly 300 yards from the tee this season, Hend is always a dangerous customer.

Wildcard: Pablo Larrazábal

Pablo Larrazábal on the range during the 2016 KLM Open

The Spaniard is 33 under par for his last two appearances at the Italian Open, and is showing strong signs of returning to the sort of form that has seen him win four times on the European Tour. Pablo has finished in the top 20 in both his last two outings at the Omega European Masters and at the KLM Open, where he was a combined 18 under par. If the 33 year old can get himself into contention heading into the weekend here at Golf Club Milano, he could be a real force, with his weekend form over the last couple of weeks producing rounds of 66, 65, 69 and 66.
