European golfers nominated for Laureus Awards

Europe's victorious 2010 Ryder Cup Team and Major Champions Martin Kaymer and Louis Oosthuizen and teenager Matteo Manassero have been nominated in two categories for the Laureus World Sports Awards to be held in Abu Dhabi next month.

Colin Montgomerie's side have been nominated in the 'Laureus World Team of the Year' category along with the New Zealand All Blacks, Inter Milan FC, Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, Red Bull Formula One team and Spain's World Cup football side.

The Ryder Cup Team, who beat the United States in a thrilling finish at The Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, have already tasted success on the awards circuit by winning the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year trophy.

Kaymer, who won the US PGA Championship last year on his way to finishing Number One in The Race to Dubai on The European Tour, Open Champion Oosthuizen and Manassero, the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year, are all under consideration for the 'Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year' section.

Golf provides 50 per cent of the contenders in that category with Kaymer, only the second German golfer to win a Major, facing stiff competition from last week's European Tour winner, Oosthuizen, who captured The Open by seven shots at St Andrews last July.

Meanwhile 17 year old Manassero re-wrote the record books in 2010, turning professional after playing in the Masters Tournament and going on to win his card for 2011 before adding the bonus of a two-year exemption by capturing his maiden title, the CASTELLO MASTERS Costa Azahar, in October.

Also nominated are French athletes Christophe Memaitre and Teddy Tamgho and German World Cup footballer Thomas Muller.

The televised awards ceremony, as voted by the Laureus World Sports Academy, will be staged in Abu Dhabi on Monday, February 7.
