Etulain triumphs on the TLA

After a third place finish in 2009 and a play-off defeat in 2010, Challenge Tour Member Julián Etulain of Argentina was not to be denied at the 2011 TLA Televisa Players Championship.

A course record round of 60, which included a superb nine-hole stretch of eight birdies and one eagle between the seventh and 15th, secured the 2011 title by six shots at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess GC.

The 22 year old entered the final three holes with the chance of becoming only the second player in TLA history to record a 59, but parred all three to finish the week on 21 under par.

His compatriot and fellow Challenge Tour Member Alan Wagner, who led after the first round, carded a 65 to share the fifth spot.

Etulain, a Buenos Aires native, said: “This victory was a goal of mine at the start of the week, but I never could have expected for it to go this well. Never before have I been in position to shoot 59, so this was pretty special. I hit some good shots on the last three holes, but I just couldn’t make them go in. But I can’t be too disappointed after a round like that.”
