The European Challenge Tour’s Danish event will return in 2021 but will be known as the Made in Esbjerg Challenge – Presented by FREJA & Total and will take place at Esbjerg Golfklub.
The event took place every year from 2015-2019 and visited a different venue on each occasion, with that trend set to continue in 2021 with the trip to Esbjerg Golfklub.
Esbjerg is the fifth-largest town in Denmark, having grown from almost nothing over just 150 years. Esbjerg's development commenced in 1868 when King Christian IX signed off the construction of Esbjerg’s harbour. Before that, Esbjerg had been a tiny hamlet of just two farms, three houses and a total population of 23. Nowadays, Esbjerg has a population of 72,000 people.
The harbour has always been the driving force behind Esbjerg. The town now stands out nationally and internationally as an energy metropolis, with a strong position in oil, gas and wind power. Esbjerg is also heading into a new growth adventure, this time as a digital hub.
Esbjerg is alive with energy and quality of life is at the forefront. The town and its surroundings are full of unique nature, the cornerstone being the Wadden Sea, a national park with Unesco World Heritage status.
Esbjerg offers high quality cultural activities and experiences. When it comes to sports, many of the town's clubs are leaders of the Danish elite. Esbjerg Municipality is a leader in the development of sporting and cultural talent, because looking ahead is part of the town's DNA.
Three of the five winners of this event – German Bernd Ritthammer, home favourite Joachim B. Hansen and 2019 champion Calum Hill – all earned promotion to the European Tour at the end of their respective seasons and this year’s victor will be hoping to follow in their footsteps.
The Made in Esbjerg Challenge – Presented by FREJA & Total will take place from August 11-14, 2021.
