Eisenhower Trophy stars set for Volopa Irish Challenge

Jack Hume and Stuart Grehan, who will represent Team Ireland’s at this year’s Eisenhower Trophy, will both tee it up in the Volopa Irish Challenge hosted by Mount Wolseley Hotel Spa and Golf Resort on the European Challenge Tour.

The amateur players will take on some of Europe’s finest young golfers in the Challenge Tour event two weeks before they fly to Cancun, in Mexico, to represent their country in the World Amateur Championships.

Hume, who is currently ranked fifth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, was a member of the successful Great Britain and Ireland side that won the Walker Cup last year. The 22 year old has also already captured the South African Stroke Play and the European Nations Trophy individual titles this season.

His fellow countryman Grehan is a member of the Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarship programme at Maynooth University and was part of the victorious European team at this year’s Palmer Cup in Formby. The 23 year old is also a two-time domestic champion having won the South and East of Ireland titles last season.

Also joining Grehan and Hume is 29 year old amateur Colm Campbell, who captured his first national title in May this year when he won the Flogas Irish Amateur Open at Royal Dublin, finishing on 16 under par to beat Hume by one stroke.

“We are very grateful to Sport Ireland for their continued support of the Volopa Irish Challenge at Mount Wolseley,” said CGI Chairman Redmond O’Donoghue.

“Playing in these events is of huge benefit for our elite amateur golfers. It gives our leading players the opportunity to compete at a higher level and gain invaluable experience on the professional stage.

“This tournament is also hugely significant for our fledgling professionals. It gives Irish players a chance to play on home soil and as a result of hosting this event, Team Ireland players benefit from invitations to play many other events on the Challenge Tour across the season.”
