Sweden’s Johan Edfors moved into the lead on day one of the US Open Championship, after completing the front nine at Congressional Country Club in 34 shots.
After following an opening birdie with a bogey at the third, Edfors, playing in his fourth US Open, picked up further shots at the fifth, sixth and eighth holes to get to three under.
A bogey six at the par five ninth disrupted his progress, but he remained clear of a host of players on one under as low scoring proved typically challenging from the outset.
Playing partner and fellow Swede Fredrik Jacobson had occupied second place on two under following birdies at three and eight, but he too bogeyed the ninth.
Also among those at one under was defending champion Graeme McDowell, who began his defence with a bogey only to make quick amends with a two on the 233-yard second and another birdie at the par five sixth.
Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen was on the same score as McDowell, along with fellow countryman Ernie Els and Australia’s Nick O’Hern.
A host of Americans were also in red figures, including JJ Henry, Ryan Palmer, Davis Love III and Jeff Overton.
World Number One Luke Donald got off to a flying start with birdies at his first two holes, the short 10th and par four 11th. However, the Englishman soon dropped back and reached the turn in four over after carding four bogeys in five holes from the 13th and a double bogey at the 18th.
Donald was paired with Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer, ranked two and three in the world and the two players who could take the top spot back off him this week.
After nine holes, both Westwood and Kaymer were in a tie for 27th on one over par.
Angel Cabrera, the 2007 US Open Champion at Oakland Hills, was a shot better off, together with the likes of Shane Lowry and YE Yang.
