With superb crowds once again in attendance at Woburn Golf Club for the conclusion of the 13th edition of the Senior Masters, Montgomerie, who started the day three clear of his nearest challenger Carl Mason, made an ideal start after getting up and down from the greenside bunker for birdie at the par five opener to immediately stretch his lead to four.

Paul Wesselingh, the 2012 Rookie of the Year, was making the move of the day, meanwhile, as he found four birdies in six holes from the fifth before adding an eagle at the par five 11th to move alongside Mason in the tie for second on four under par.
