The two-time Challenge Tour winner had three birdies in four holes from e second to turn in 33, then picked up an eagle at the long 11th.

That took him to five under par, two ahead of home favourite Tiago Cruz, England’s Matthew Armitage and Denmark’s Joachim B Hansen.

England’s William Harrold was alone in fifth on two under, while another of the Portuguese contingent, former winner Ricardo Santos, and two-time European Tour winner José Manuel Lara were among those on one under.

With the tournament reduced to 54 holes after strong winds prevented any play on Thursday, gusty breezes again caused a delay on Friday morning with play starting one hour and 50 minutes later than planned.
