Drummond moves top at The International

Ross Drummond rose from the pack to move into the clubhouse lead midway through the second day at the Dutch Senior Open as the weather took a turn for the better at The International in Amsterdam.

The Scot made the best of those favourable conditions as he carded a bogey-free four under par round of 69 over the pristine course beside the Dutch capital’s Schipol Airport.

Teeing off at the tenth, Drummond started with a solid par at the difficult opening hole before carding his first birdie of the day at the par four 11th before another at the par five 18th took him to the turn in two under par.

He picked up two more shots at the par four second and the par four fifth to move to the top on one under for the tournament.

“The conditions were a lot easier today,” said the 56 year old. “Yesterday was so difficult with the rain and the cold and the underground conditions as well but the course has tried out quite a lot today and there were preferred lies so that helped.

“I played nicely. I didn’t get myself into much trouble and, like anybody who has had a good round, took my chances and if I did miss a green I got up and down, so it was just a tight round of golf.

“I haven’t played particularly well this year so it’s nice to be right up there. Apart from a good top five finish at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters I have been down the field, so this has come out of the blue a little bit.

“Who knows what the difference is, it’s just golf and it’s a fickle game. Sometimes things just click into place so hopefully I can just keep that going and play solid from tee to green and hole a few putts.”

Marc Farry was the next best in the clubhouse after the joint overnight leader signed for a one over par second round of 74, while Canada’s Phil Jonas was another shot further back on one over thanks to a one under par second round of 72.

“If you’re going to win tournaments it’s easier to win from a leading position than being a couple of shots back obviously, because you don’t have the shots to make up. You have to just see what happens, who knows. You just need to do your best and if it’s good enough it’s good enough, if it’s not it’s not.
