Donaldson back on happy hunting ground

Jamie Donaldson returns to the scene of one of his most important wins this week as the third edition of the D+D REAL Czech Masters takes place at Albatross Golf Resort.

The Welshman's victory at the inaugural event in 2014 not only handed him his third win on the European Tour but also sealed his place at the Ryder Cup - where he would go on to clinch the winning point for Europe after a stunning approach to the 15th in his match against Keegan Bradley.

Donaldson is unlikely to find himself teeing it up at Hazeltine in September with two top tens over the qualifying period so far, a campaign not helped by suffering a nasty finger injury after an incident with a chainsaw in January.

The 40 year old will be looking to improve on that tally in Prague and is happy to be back in a place that holds fond memories for him.

"I remember speaking to Paul (McGinley) about getting picks and things like that and he said, 'listen, I want you to try and make sure you get into the team automatically'," said Donaldson.

"I knew then I had to finish top eight to guarantee my automatic selection and I ended up winning the tournament. It was an amazing week, an important week and it cemented my Ryder Cup spot.

"It was great to win the tournament, we're all out here to win the event so it was great first and foremost to win, then for the icing on the cake to secure the spot for the Ryder Cup. There was loads riding on the week and I managed to come out on top and secure my place.

I love coming back here. It's a beautiful place, the course really suits me. Great memories and great to be back - Jamie Donaldson

Donaldson will face a different test to two years ago with water added to three holes at Albatross Golf Resort, but he is confident his experience will stand him in good stead.

"It will be very different," he added. "I've not seen it yet, I'm going to play the course tomorrow for the first time since two years ago so I'll see all the changes, sort out a gameplan and go from there.

"It's great, you know how to do it, you've been there before, generally the course suits your eye so it's a case of coming back and remembering the shots.

"But that was two years ago, we're here now and now is the time to fine-tune the game over the next couple of days and get ready to find it again. It's been up and down. Some weeks it's good, some weeks it hasn't been.

"I've been in decent positions in tournaments but not managed to finish them off. Overall it's there or thereabouts. It's just about putting it together on the week."
