Donald’s Wentworth approach wins May Shot of the Month

A superb approach from Luke Donald during the BMW PGA Championship has been voted by members of My European Tour as Shot of the Month for May, with one lucky fan winning a superb weekend for two at the Estonian Golf & Country Club.

Luke Donald

Donald’s pin-point mid iron came on the 489-yard par four 15th hole of Wentworth Club’s world famous West Course during the championship’s first round, in which Donald shot a four under par 68 to kick-start his defence of the title he won so dramatically 12 months earlier.

Donald would, of course, go on to card four consecutive rounds in the 60s to retain his title by four shots from compatriot Justin Rose and Scotland’s Paul Lawrie in a truly emphatic performance from the World Number One.

But it was on day one that the Englishman, having found the semi-rough on the left side of the fairway from the tee, flew in a marvellous mid iron that pitched just in front of the green, rolled smoothly onto the putting surface in towards the pin using the right to left slope, before just brushing the left side of the cup.

The Englishman’s wonderful Wentworth moment was a landslide winner, securing almost 82 per cent of the public vote, holding off entries from Denmark’s Søren Kjeldsen, who holed out from a greenside bunker in the final round of the Reale Seguros Open de España, Ricardo Santos, who played a fabulous tee shot en route to a maiden European Tour triumph on home soil at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal, and rejuvenated Lawrie, whose sublime approach helped him to victory over Peter Hanson at the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

All those My European Tour fans who voted for Donald’s shot were entered into the prize draw
to win the fabulous golf break at Estonian Golf & Country Club, that includes three rounds of golf for two people on the Sea and Stone Courses with accommodation provided in a golf villa for two nights.

Ranked inside Europe’s top 100 courses the last two years running, Estonia Golf and Country Club is situated just half an hour from the centre of Tallinn, Estonia’s capital city and Europe’s Cultural Capital in 2011, and just a 15 minute drive from Tallinn International Airport, and as part of The European Tour Courses network it is guaranteed to offer a fantastic trip.

The shot is the fifth to go forward to the 2012 Shot of the Year competition, following Sergio Garcia (January), Martin Kaymer (February), Paul Casey (March) and Louis Oosthuizen (April).
