Donald hot on Westwood’s heels

Luke Donald has moved up a place to Number Two on the Official World Golf Ranking to become his compatriot and fellow European Tour Member Lee Westwood’s closest challenger.

Donald would have usurped Westwood as World Number One with victory at the rain-affected Players Championship on the US PGA Tour, but weekend rounds of 71 meant the Englishman came up just short, finishing three shots behind the eventual champion KJ Choi of Korea.

But his tied fourth finish at TPC Sawgrass was enough for Donald to climb to second place ahead of former World Number One Martin Kaymer of Germany, who dropped to third.

Third round leader Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland remains in fifth place on the Official World Golf Ranking after tumbling down the leaderboard with a closing round of 79.
