Doak sees off host Lawrie

Scotland's Chris Doak is through to the last 16 of the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Matchplay after edging past the tournament's host in a thrilling encounter at Murcar Links.

The 37 year old beat former Open Championship winner Lawrie by one hole despite carding three bogeys and two double bogeys on Friday.

There was nothing to separate the Scottish duo at the turn, with both players having taken three holes each, but Doak won the tenth and 13th to put himself in the driving seat.

Lawrie reduced the deficit to one at the 14th, but with both players carding pars at the final four holes, Doak held on to book his place in the third round.

Doak was thrilled with his win. He said: "It is fantastic to beat anybody, but Paul being such a good player and being the host, it is a little bit extra special I guess.

"I have not really played my best and Paul certainly did not play his best today. But I am getting there and building confidence, which is the main thing. It is good to go to the next round."

Lawrie was disappointed to exit the tournament. He said: "I am obviously disappointed. Gutted. But I did not play very well today.

"I hit the ball really poorly and struggled all day with ball striking. I did not hole any putts that I had to hole to be fair and Chris did. Both of us played pretty poor. If it had been a match of ball striking today, it would have been a spectacle to be fair.

"It was pretty poor in places. He has holed three or four putts that you have to hole to keep matches going when you are up or when you are one or two ahead. So fair play. He is the boy that is going to be playing tomorrow and deserves to be playing tomorrow.

"Obviously I wanted to be a little bit further this week. I felt I was playing good and in control of my game, but today I kind of just did not have it." Paul Lawrie

Doak will face England's David Howell in round three after the former Ryder Cup player cruised to a 6 and 4 win over David Drysdale.

Scotland's Marc Warren also progressed after beating Fabrizio Zanotti 3 and 2 and he was happy with his performance.

"I played really good," he said. "Really solid tee to green again and finished off with two really good putts on 15 and 16."

Warren will face Nicolas Colsaerts on Saturday morning after the Belgian beat Trevor Fisher Jnr 4 and 3.

Peter Uihlein eventually beat in-form 20 year old Matt Fitzpatrick on the 19th in one of the best matches of the day, while local lad Richie Ramsay is through after his 4 and 3 win against Edoardo Molinari.

Englishman Chris Wood had been the first man to confirm his spot in the last 16 thanks to his second 5 and 4 win of the week, the 27 year old needing just two and a half hours to beat Spain's Jorge Campillo.

Johan Carlsson is also through after beating number one seed James Morrison 2 and 1, while Michael Hoey eased to a 5 and 4 win against Kristoffer Broberg and Tyrrell Hatton beat Mikael Lundberg 4 and 2.
