DID YOU KNOW –  140TH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP – FACTS ABOUT ROYAL ST GEORGE’S

·         The 2011 Open Championship will be the 14thstaged at Royal St George’s. Only the Old Course at St Andrews (28), Prestwick (24) and  Muirfield (24) have hosted the world’s oldest Major Championship on more occasions.

·         In 1894 Royal St George’s was the first course outside Scotland to host The Open Championship and won by J H Taylor.

·         The Kent venue was giving Royal Patronage in May 1902 by King Edward VII.

·         When the club was formed it was named after England’s Patron Saint.

·         Harry Vardon (1899 and 1911) and Walter Hagen (1922 and 1928) hold the distinction of being the only players to win  The Open twice at this venue.

·         Ernie Els created Open Championship history at Royal St George’s in 1993 by becoming the first player to score in the 60’s in all four rounds. His scores were: 68,69,69,68 for a 72 hole total of       274 (-6). He finished in a tie for sixth.
