Del Moral on a roll in Madeira

Carlos Del Moral surged to the top of the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal leaderboard as he reached 14 under par halfway through his third round.

The Spaniard started the day at eight under par and five shots off the lead held by England’s Oliver Wilson, but six birdies on the front nine – four in a row from the sixth – propelled him into the lead, one shot ahead Wilson, who was level par through eight holes.

Also on 13 under was Swede Mikael Lundberg, who scorched through the field with an eight under par 64 to set the clubhouse lead.

“It was just a combination of hitting it close and holing lots of putts,” said Lundberg. “I knew I’d have to go very low today to get in contention. It should be a bit trickier this afternoon for the leaders as the wind is picking up, so we will see.”

Englishman Andy Sullivan and Swedish pair Magnus A Carlsson and Joakim Lagergren were all level par through eight holes and 12 under for the tournament.
