As the sun rises over San Domenico Golf, lives will change, there will be celebrations and commiserations and, more importantly, the next set of future European Tour stars will be decided before the sun sets over the final day of the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final.
A whole season has come down to this, the final tournament of the 2011 Challenge Tour and the battle for the 20 places on The European Tour in 2012 reaches fever point, with many twists and turns to come.
Andrea Pavan leads the way on his ‘home’ course and has designs on stealing into the top spot in the Rankings, ahead of current leader Sam Little and Tommy Fleetwood, who will take the title as the Challenge Tour’s top player in 2011 if he finishes inside the top two by the day’s end.
But there are more important things at hand for many of the players, with 45 hopefuls in the field battling for just 20 European Tour cards.
Englishmen Andrew Johnston and Sam Walker, as well as Swede Pelle Edberg and Austrian Florian Praegant, were all in line to sneak into the top 20 having begun the week outside of the all-important cut-off point, while Simon Thornton was just about clinging on to his hopes of a European Tour card next year having begun what has been a turbulent week for the Irishman in 15thplace.
