Company at the top for Waring

Paul Waring was joined by Scott Jamieson and Simon Thornton at the top of the leaderboard as the final round of the Portugal Masters began at Oceânico Victoria Golf Course.

The Englishman had a two shot lead overnight as he seeks a maiden European Tour title, but this event has seen the winner come from at least three shots back on the final day in each of the last four years.

Waring bogeyed the first after missing a ten foot par putt, and was swiftly joined on 15 under by Saint Omer winner Thornton and Jamieson, who came within a whisker of The European Tour’s first 59 on Saturday.

Both players picked up shots at the second, Ireland’s Thornton holing a lengthy putt from off the green while Scotland’s Jamieson fired his approach to two feet.

The 2008 winner Alvaro Quiros, who resides in nearby Vilamoura, was one behind after holing a 25 foot birdie putt at the second, alongside South Africa’s Hennie Otto, Welshman Jamie Donaldson and English pair Ross Fisher and David Lynn as a dramatic finish beckoned.
