Coetzee joins Kingston out in front

South African George Coetzee joined his compatriot James Kingston at the top of the leaderboard as the second round of the BMW PGA Championship began at Wentworth Club.

Coetzee, who carded a 69 yesterday, had birdied the second and fourth to be out in 33 and also picked up a shot on the 11th, to reach six under – the mark Kingston set with his brilliant opening 66 on Thursday.

England's Simon Khan, winner here in 2010, was also going well and only one behind after an eagle on the par five fourth.

He was alongside Finn Mikko Ilonen, who like Kingston was amongst the afternoon starters.

Italy’s Francesco Molinari turned in 33 and Scotland’s Marc Warren was one under through five holes to join the group on four under.

Luke Donald had gone into the second round of the BMW PGA Championship insisting a third win in succession over the West Course was not impossible, despite an opening 78.

The World Number Six had not given up on his bid to match Colin Montgomerie's hat-trick of titles from 1998-2000, saying: "You never say that.

"This place always plays quite tough. The forecast is not good so hopefully a low round will get me back in the tournament, but it's certainly disappointing to be this far back."

Donald was right about the weather on a cold and wet morning, but after a par on the opening hole he ran up a double bogey five on the par three second and bogeyed the third to drop to nine over par.

Eleven of the victorious Ryder Cup team from Medinah are competing in The European Tour's Flagship Event, but Donald was far from the only one struggling.

Ian Poulter double-bogeyed the third to drop to six over, while Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell both shot 74 in the first round, with McIlroy five over for the last six holes in a back nine of 41.

Donald repaired some of the damage with birdies at the fourth and eighth to get back to seven over par, but that was still well outside the projected cut mark of one over.
