The European Challenge Tour today announced that Club de Golf Playa Serena will host the Challenge de España from September 7-10, 2023.
Club de Golf Playa Serena, situated in the town of Roquetas de Mar close to Almería, offers spectacular coastal views and it will welcome the Challenge de España for the first time this September.
The visit to Club de Golf Playa Serena forms part of the Challenge Tour’s Road to Mallorca International Schedule, which comprises 29 tournaments in 18 countries across the world.
The top 20 players on the Road to Mallorca Rankings at the conclusion of the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final at Club de Golf Alcanada, Mallorca, will earn DP World Tour playing privileges for the 2024 season.
Jamie Hodges, Challenge Tour Director, said: "It’s exciting to be able to take the Challenge Tour to Club de Golf Playa Serena for the Challenge de España. We are grateful to Club de Golf Playa Serena and the Spanish Federation for their work in bringing this event to fruition.
“We are looking forward to returning to Spain with the Challenge de España coming at a vital time in our season, and it will certainly be a defining week on the 2023 Road to Mallorca".
Jaime Salaverri, President of the Professionals Committee of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, said: "The fact that the Challenge de España will be played in September, and that there are only four more tournaments left to finish the season, makes the tournament even more important, and it is in the spotlight worldwide.
“And in that spotlight we have a Spaniards Manuel Elvira and Iván Cantero Gutierrez who are both currently in the top 20 on the Road to Mallorca Rankings. The support of the Spanish Federation is reflected in the players who make it to the DP World Tour, and these weeks will be crucial to get more Spaniards to achieve it".
Miguel García Soriano, President of Club de Golf Playa Serena, said: "We are very proud that the Challenge Tour is coming to Almería and we have made every effort to ensure that the course is in the condition that a tournament of this magnitude deserves, working together with the Green Section of the RFEG and the agronomists of the Challenge Tour.
“I believe that everyone who comes to Roquetas de Mar will be delighted to discover not only the magnificent golf course we have, but also the area, the climate and the gastronomy typical of our province. For us, we are really excited to see the next generation of golfing superstars come to our club who will be, very soon, winners on the DP World Tour".
