Clarke looking forward to Denmark test

Darren Clarke is excited about getting his first taste of the Made in Denmark after the huge success of the tournament's inaugural Race to Dubai appearance last year.

Marc Warren claimed victory at Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort last August as he held off the challenge of Welshman Bradley Dredge with over 80,000 people coming out to see the European Tour return to Denmark for the first time since 2003.

And European Ryder Cup Captain Clarke is looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere himself when he tees off alongside Thomas Bjørn and Thorbjørn Olesen at 1320 on Thursday.

"The guys who played here last year – the likes of Thomas Bjørn and Thorbjørn Olesen – said how good the event was, how big the crowds were and how good the atmosphere was," he said.

"Everyone really enjoyed it so I was keen to try it for myself."

The 2016 edition of the Made in Denmark will have repercussions for Clarke not just as a player but also in his role as European Captain as the event will mark the end of the Ryder Cup points race.

The race begins at the M2M Russian Open in two weeks' time and Clarke believes the Made in Denmark being handed the conclusion shows just how far the tournament has come in a short period of time.

"I think it's obviously developing," he said. "It's going to be the last counting event for Ryder Cup points next year which is obviously a worthy stature and an indication of where the European Tour wants the tournament to go.

"The tournament itself is going to be another huge success this year and will be able to build on it again for next year.

"Not many tournaments get the opportunity to be the final counting event. I've no doubt this event is up to that standing and I'm looking forward to helping it grow in stature.

"I'm hoping that the guys on the cusp of making the team next year will come here and play."

Olesen is one of the men who will be hoping to be in the mix for a place in the team to go to Hazeltine but before that he is keeping his focus on his home event.

The 25 year old, a two-time European Tour winner, finished in a tie for seventh last year alongside countryman Lasse Jensen, with Bjørn a shot ahead, and is pleased with the depth of the home presence in Farsø.

"It was such a big success last year, all of us Danes had a great time and I think everyone really enjoyed coming here and playing in front of the big crowds," he said. "Hopefully this year will be as good and maybe even better.

"I'm really looking forward to playing some good golf this week

"After such a strong showing last year, word really spread around the European Tour about how good it is, so that's probably why we have a stronger field this year. A lot of players want to come here, which is very good for the tournament.

"We have a lot of Danes as well - about 20 I think - which is very positive also.

"The tournament keeps building. Last year it was not great weather, but this time of year is usually nice in Denmark and it looks like it will be sunny all week, which will be nice for the spectators."

Olesen has just a single top ten on the European Tour this year after finishing second at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open but has been working hard to find the consistency that could bring results this week.

"I've been here in Denmark for a couple of weeks which has been really nice," he said. "I took a couple of days off to spend with my friends, which was great, and since then I've been working my ass off to get ready for the tournament.

"I came up a bit earlier than usual and played a few practice rounds. The weather was good and there weren't many people about, so it was nice to have the place to myself and familiarise myself with the course again.

"I've been playing some good golf but only for nine, ten, 11 holes. Then it goes, which isn't good enough. You need consistency, which is what I've been working hard on - making the bad shots better."
