Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke believes he is close to ending his three-year title drought on The European Tour as he prepares to tee up in the Trophée Hassan II.
The 42 year old’s last win came at the 2008 KLM Open, although there were two runner-up finishes last season en route to 30th place on The Race to Dubai.
“I am working away and keeping my head up and trying to keep the spirits high,” said the former Ryder Cup star. “I am playing well enough and doing the right things, I just need that one week where it all comes together and I will be off and running.”
This week’s event in Morocco is a pro-am for the fist two days, and Clarke will be keeping it in the family.
“I am playing with my dad this week which will be a lot of fun,” he added. “We played together last year and didn’t play great but we really enjoyed and I think he is glad to be back, although he is struggling with a back injury at the moment.
“He wasn’t too pleased that he could only manage nine holes today but I managed to get him fitted for a brand new set of white TaylorMade woods and he is now delighted! He is very excited now.”
And Clarke is looking forward to the change of venue - with the event split between Golf du Palais Royal and Golf de L’Ocean.
“The palace – that golf course is just awesome,” he continued. “It remains as good as it was then (in the 1990s) – although, I am sure it wasn’t as hard back then as it is today!”
