Chawrasia reined in in New Delhi

Eddie Pepperell produced a big finish to take a share of the lead as the second round of the weather-delayed Hero Indian Open was completed on Saturday morning.

With over four hours lost to the threat of lightning on days one and two, 66 players returned to finish their first 36 holes and Pepperell signed for a 70 to join defending champion SSP Chawrasia and Malaysian Danny Chia at five under.

Chia had 15 holes to compete in his second round and made five birdies to take a share of top spot.

Home favourite Chawrasia registered a brilliant bogey-free 67 at DLF Golf and Country Club on Friday to set the pace, with England's David Horsey sitting a shot behind.

Pepperell had 16 holes to complete in the morning and bogeyed the 14th before picking the shot back up on the 18th to turn in level par 36. Another bogey was to follow on the fifth but birdies on the sixth and seventh had him well in contention.

A closing birdie on the ninth made it three in four holes and the Englishman was in a share of the lead.

"It's been a challenging day with what happened yesterday," he said. "The delays and having to sit on a good first round having not had a good first round for quite a long time was a bit challenging.

"So to go out there and continue to play as well as I did yesterday and, actually, I improved as the round went on today which was a big positive.

"It was just a good round."

Chia made an excellent start upon the resumption, birdieing the fourth, and when he made back-to-back gains on the eighth and ninth to turn in 33 he was in a share of the lead. Bogeys on the 11th and 13th put the brakes on his charge but birdies on the 15th and last moved him back to the summit.

Italy's Matteo Manassero played his remaining 13 holes in level par with birdies on the 12th and 15th and bogeys on the eighth and 13th to get to three under.

Spaniard Carlos Pigem and Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey were then at two under where they were joined by Paul Peterson.

The American made a double-bogey on the fifth before darkness saw play stopped on Friday but bounced back brilliantly to come home in 33.

Spain's Pep Angles was four over for his round after seven holes but responded with an eagle and four birdies to get to one under alongside Australian Terry Pilkadaris and Scot Stephen Gallacher.

Scotland's Duncan Stewart made the ninth hole-in-one of the season when he holed a six iron from 178 yards at the fifth to win a BMW M3.
