Chapman on the charge in Benahavis

Roger Chapman made a charge up the leaderboard midway through his second round at the Benahavis Senior Masters, reaching the turn in three under par to sit five shots behind the lead set by Gary Wolstenholme.

The Englishman has been on cracking form of late, earning three top ten finishes in his last three appearances, having challenged for the title on each occasion and finishing second place at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters before a third placed finish at the Casa Serena Open.

He is still chasing his first win on the European Senior Tour, however, and it looked like this tournament would also pass him by after an opening one over par 72 left him seven shots behind Wolstenholme.

But birdies at the first, sixth and eighth holes gave him a three under par front nine of 32 and put him right back in the mix at La Quinta Golf and Country Club in the south of Spain.

Wolstenholme, meanwhile, carded for a birdie on the second hole to extend his lead to two shots over playing partner Argentinian Adan Sowa through two holes.

John Gould made bogey on the second and fell behind while Mark James was one under through three holes and three shots off the pace as he searches for his first Senior Tour victory of the season.

Carl Mason also made some progress up the leaderboard after birdies on the second and sixth holes left him two under par through six and four shots off the lead, while Mark Mouland made his first bogey in over three rounds at the third hole as he was one over through three.
