Chapman edging towards a maiden win

Roger Chapman tees it up in this week’s Matrix Jersey Classic feeling optimistic that he is heading towards a maiden European Senior Tour title after an encouraging start to the 2010 season.

The Englishman has four top ten finishes to his credit this campaign, including a share of second place in the Handa Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum, and currently sits third in the Order of Merit.

Chapman had a storming start to his Senior Tour career last year, leading in both Mallorca and Ireland – with a hole in one in the 2009 US Senior PGA Championship sandwiched in between – before finishing in a third and tied third respectively.

He just missed out to Mike Harwood for the Rookie of the Year Award, finishing 12th in the Order of Merit but after a superb opening to the current campaign the 51 year old feels he is edging closer to that vital first win to add to his one European Tour victory in 2000.

“I was pleased with my second place at Stapleford Park,” said Chapman. “I’ve been playing nicely this season and that kept the run going.

“I’ve had two fourth place finishes, a ninth and an 11th before that so it’s pretty consistent. It gives you a lot of confidence.

“I’m feeling more comfortable every time I go out on the course now. You keep knocking on the door and hopefully it will happen. Bill Longmuir played fantastic at Stapleford Park but I was very happy with the way I played.

“We’ve got some good courses coming up over the next few weeks and I really enjoy playing the links courses.”

Chapman finished in a share of sixth place at La Moye Golf Club last year and will be trying to improve on that this week in the 15th edition of the Matrix Jersey Classic.
