Casey ready for match play battle in Austin

Paul Casey is looking forward to the "volatility" of match play golf as he aims to continue his recent good form in America at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas.

The Englishman was victorious on his last visit to the United States when he won the Valspar Championship in Innisbrook earlier this month to collect his first title since the 2014 KLM Open on the European Tour.

Casey fell at the round of 16 stage to Japan's Hideto Tanihara last season but he has a strong record in the match play event, with second-placed finishes in 2009 and 2010 and a couple of fifth places in his last eight appearances in the tournament.

The 40 year old is in Group 10 with fellow Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick and American pair Kyle Stanley and Russell Henley during the round-robin stages, and Casey is ready for the challenges ahead at the Austin Country Club.

"I enjoy match play a lot," Casey said. "I love the volatility of it. You're always at the mercy of where you play, to a certain degree. It can suit certain players.

"I found this golf course hard to navigate. The margin around here is very small. You're always three feet away from a glorious shot or a disaster.

"Thank god it's match play, because I wouldn't want to play straight play around here."

The Englishman has resumed his European Tour career this season after plying his trade in America for the last three years and a sustained run of form could help towards a place in Dane Thomas Bjørn's European Ryder Cup team in September.

It has been a decade since Casey last appeared in the biennial event for Europe, which will be held at Le National Golf in Paris, but the World Number 13 has downplayed his chances of a first World Golf Championship trophy.

"(I am) feeling good, but I'm very unprepared this week. I travelled back to England last week and just arrived back yesterday, which might be a good thing.

"My expectations are moderate. I'm confident, but I'd say not well prepared, so I feel like I've got a lot of work to do.

"If there's a format which will allow me to get away with a mistake or two, this would be the one."

The 13-time European Tour event winner was also delighted to get back into the winning circle at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club nine days ago as he ended a three-and-a-half year title drought.

"(It was) probably the happiest I've ever been after any victory on Sunday, walking out on the 18th green and receiving the trophy. I loved it.

"I don't think any of them have felt quite as good as that. It reminded me of my first victory at Gleneagles (during the 2001 Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship), like, wow, I finally won."
