Casey eyeing Porsche European Open glory

Paul Casey expressed his desire to put his name on the Porsche European Open trophy ahead of the prestigious event's 40th anniversary this week.

Englishman Casey is among a world class field assembled at Green Eagle Golf Courses for a tournament he holds in high regard, having been a spectator when Walton Heath Golf Club hosted it in his youth.

The World Number 15 is keen to add his name to a roll call of winners that includes Sir Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Tom Kite, Greg Norman and Sandy Lyle.

He said: "The tournament has got a great history. I remember it as a small kid, the European Open was once played at Walton Heath many years ago.

"I used to go along and watch it and carry scoreboards down the fairways.

"It's got great names on the trophy and it's always been part of the fabric of the European Tour, trying to etch your name on that trophy alongside some of the greats of the game.

"I’d love to put my name on that trophy, for sure.

"If you’re looking at the rankings, we’ve got some talent here, (Bryson) DeChambeau, (Patrick) Reed and (Pat) Perez.

"It's going to be a tough week but as I said I would love to win this one, my expectations are pretty high. I’m not just here for the good weather."

Casey has enjoyed a productive season so far, recording top-20 finishes at two World Golf Championships events and two Major Championships before making the cut at last week's Open at Carnoustie.

"The game feels great," he added. "So far it’s been a solid year and there’s no change in that from last week.

“It was frustrating to be down the pack but it’s a different course this week and there’s no reason why I can’t challenge for the lead."
