Casey comeback stuns Molinari

Paul Casey was thrilled to progress as he recovered from four down against Francesco Molinari to make it three wins out of three at the WGC – Cadillac Match Play in San Francisco.

Having seen off Chris Kirk and Adam Scott over the first two days at TPC Harding Park, Casey knew victory over fellow Ryder Cup star Molinari would secure his passage to the last 16.

But the Italian came out firing and turned four up after birdies at the fourth, fifth and eighth.

It was a different story on the back nine, though, as some inspired golf from Casey mixed with Molinari’s indifferent putting saw the Englishman win one up to ensure a clash with Charl Schwartzel in the last 16.

“He did give me one or two – he missed a couple of short putts,” said Casey.

“I also played some really good golf on the back nine and I needed to – I was aware that I needed to make some birdies to make something happen and I did that. I feel lucky to have got through.

“I love match play. This one does suit me – aggressive play – I’ve had good history in match play.

“You never really forget once you learn to play this format.”
